Oregon Trail -  Road Trip, Biking, Hiking, Camping
Week 2  -  Sunday    -  Nevada Desert
Back To Main Oregon Trail Page

A 500 mile drive between Salt Lake City, UT and Reno, NV. is borning.
I once drove this route one summer night because it was only in the 90's F at night.
Now that it is October, I decided to see what I missed driving in the dark and so
planned an all day journey this trip.   With a full tank a gas, cruise on, speed set, it is only 79 F
on this overcast day, the journey starts.

My ham radio was nearby, but I discovered that cell coverage was very good the whole route.
This is do mostly because of the mountains in the desert.

Things to look at along the trip, like a mining town or the "light" traffic.

Some mountains to cross, but mostly the route is flat road.

No way of avoiding the sun even if headed east or west
except to drive at night.

Sun Set was a welcome relief. By dark I will be in Reno.
I took three short breaks to fill up on gas and catch a restroom.
It may be done in two, but you don't want to be looking
for a gas station on low fuel.

Yes there are places to get fuel and eat, but
it could be 50-100 miles or more separated.
Rest Stops were mostly permanent concrete out houses.
Once I reached Reno, NV. I was only 4 hours more drive
back to Santa Rosa, CA.
While I started in Salt Lake City at 12 noon Sat., and arrived
in Reno at 8 pm,  and got to Santa Rosa Sunday morning
at 2pm including breaks and naps, I call this my Sunday trip
because it took me all day Sunday to get over this leg of the trip.
