Economies will Boom and Bust over Time
So will hometowns like Petersburg, Va. and like Laurel,
Ms.
Laurel, Mississippi was once called "The
City Beautiful"
It's 140 year old history begin as the "Yellow Pine Capital of the World"
Timber begin to run out at the start of the Great Depression.
From Boom to Bust - Laurel's financial system collapsed.
It would be William H. Mason who discovered a way to turn
vast wood waste
into fiber Masonite Board, a substitute material used during WW1.
Boom to Bust, back to Boom again for some years, yet another Bust.
Oil was discovered in the 1970's, this Boom only lasted for a decade.
By 2000, it was going to take a lot more effort to restore this hometown again.
Laurel, Mississippi is doing just that,
thanks to the HGTV
show "Home Town" and Ben and Erin Napler's quest.
Their one home, one building, one street at a time approach.
Laurel, Mississippi was once called "The City
Beautiful"
Today you could call Laurel "The City Resilient"
