For the next 95 years, Ethel Totty used this post card as her birth certificate.  Unreal.

Nov. 23, 1936
Virgie Mae Totty purchased a life insurance policy on Ethel Mae Totty (age 15)

Oct. 3, 1942
Ethel Mae Totty was married, lied about her age, no proof of birth required.

Dec. 17, 1954
Virgie Mae Totty died, and her head stone name was listed as
Virgie May Totty.  No on questioned the middle name.

Feb. 15, 2018
Ethel Mae Totty died.
Insurance policies were rendered for Ethel T. Anderson
Note:  "T"   for Tatty/Totty, and May/Mae not mentioned.
Her head stone name was Ethel T. Anderson.
The cemetery asked the family for her maiden name.
NOW WHAT?
Ethel May Totty was provided.

Jun. 15, 2018
With the only family birth record known, 
a new birth certificate was requested.
The state Bureau of Vital Statistics had no record in their database for:
Ethel May Totty or Ethel Mae Totty.
The Post Card proof was in question.
A search for Tatty was tried.  Problem Solved.
Ethel Mae Totty was recorded as Ethel May Tatty
